There has been about 2m of snowfall during the last seven days. The snow was so deep that ski lifts were shut, the funicular has been stopping at the Chamonix terminus and not traveling up to Switzerland. Several roads have been closed and snow warnings issued.
Compare this to 2 seasons ago, when we experienced the incredibly warm Feb weather, grass showing on pistes, and warnings that global warming meant the finish of snowboarding in the European Alps. Highlighting this the OECD’s report from 2006 warned that global warming could make skiing too dear for the majority of skiers, with one-third of ski fields going bust and the receding of glaciers. Scientists say that it is virtually impossible to ascribe the seasonal deviations in the snow to the off shoots of climate change.
We might have the worst recession in nearly 25 yrs, and the Sterling has headed to more lows versus the Euro, but the snowboarding is excellent, and the last reservations prove that people are enthusiastic to revel in the supreme conditions and our luxury chalets are all occupied. This winter is certainly the best in nine seasons, and many skiers are saying it is the best ski snowboarding snow in ten yrs.
However remember that this amount of snow means big risks of avalanche.
