A recent discussion came up about small pocket poker pairs in late position, and I felt obligated to chime in and fuel the fire of the discussion. The initial question was, is it worth even calling with a pocket pair if someone in earlier position raises. Assuming that the person raising has some sort of a hand, and you’re supposed to flop a set about 12% of the time, does calling justify itself as far as making money goes? Well, there are a couple of things to do here. If the standard raise is of 3-5 big blinds, then you can consider reraising in the cut off position with a minimal four bet to probe to see how strong the hand is. Or, if you’re feeling like calling, you could call and then see what happens on the flop, if it’s checked to you, you raise yourself, or if you get another bet, you can float the villain on the flop. And then there’s the everpresent fold that you can do, especially if the raiser is a super nitty player who only plays high online poker hands. I think the conclusion is that there is no blanket answer to the pocket pair in late position question at the casino online. It really depends on your opponent. If he’s an ABC player, you can possibly reraise him off a stronger hand since he’ll be thinking in terms of how he thinks. He raises early with good cards, so you must have better cards if you reraise him in a later position. Again, it all depends on your own reads. Of course, a call can be right, too, because if he’s again that super nit that’s playing a high pocket pair and you flop your set, you’re getting paid for sure. More brain food for you to be confused about and ponder over until you come to your own conclusion.
